Rheumatic diseases are those which present with symptoms predominantly in the musculoskeletal system, comprising the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bursae and connective tissue. Arthritis is very common in the population, especially in the older age group. They are a major cause of ill-health and disability.
The feet are commonly involved in a number of important rheumatic diseases and may indeed often be the site of presenting symptoms.
Rheumatic disorders include:

- Spondyloarthritis, ie ankylosing spondylitis
- Crystal deposition disease, eg gout
- Septic arthritis
